More about Barker Field:

Barker Field on The Web

This site is relatively static. Minutes and details of our organization are posted here. Friends of Barker Field maintains a presence on these social networking sites:

Our Facebook Page FOBF - Barker Field Dog Park was set up this Winter to help get our word out on this popular network. As at April 22nd, 59 people 'like this page'.

Our Yahoo Group Barker Field Regulars was originally set up by R-DOG and has been used as our official 'discussion page'. This group has 279 members as at April 22nd.

Our page at EnRichmond Foundation's Website, a fresh new site launched this Spring, will be enhanced to make it easier for us to get our news out via everybody's social network.

Organization:

Friends of Barker Field is partner group of the EnRichmond Foundation, formerly known as Richmond Recreation And Parks Foundation. As a partner, we use their 501C3 status and donations to Friends of Barker Field are tax-deductable. They keep our funds safe and enhance the stability of our group.

The city provides some maintenance services thru the Departments of Public Works and of Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities. Barker Field's 4 super cans of bagged dog poop are regularly emptied by a Parks crew, and they occasionally cut the grass around the fences, and take care of ditches and the parking lot.

Fences, gates, water, drainage, chips and anything else to facilitate our dogs' special use of the park is provided by volunteer effort or through contributions to the Friends of Barker Field.

You can help in other ways, too:

Carry an extra bag and pick up any stray piles of poop you might see. It's easy for a dog's owner to miss this opportunity to keep Barker Field clean. Most owners will clean up after their dog if you approach them with a smile and a bag and point out the pile.

Help us enforce our Rules, especially the 'No Small Children' rule -- when a child is scratched or run over by a pack of dogs it is a frightening event for all involved and a child's screaming or squealing will bring every dog in the park to the scene. The picnic tables offer no protection for a child, and one of the worst incidents was a child who got knocked over by a pack of dogs running over the table! Our regulars feel that small children in the park are our single biggest liability. Most parents, when told about the rule will take their child out of the park.

Past and Continuing Projects:

Since its organization, FOBF's biggest problem has been drainage at the watering area:

Bring your dog to Barker Field. It is well-utilized in all weathers. There are usually several dogs there, often dozens, and sometimes several dozen milling and chasing around the park.
